Water Conservation

July Home Maintenance Tips

Let’s face it – it gets hot in Nashville during the summer months. The heat and sun can be brutal on your landscaping during the summer, but there are easy steps to conserve water AND have a green lawn.

Here are some tips from the American Society of Landscape Architects:

  1. Use native plants.

When deciding what to plant in your landscape, choose native and drought-resistant varieties.  Maintenance will be lower, and these plants will be quick to establish themselves in the soil.

  2. Use compost and mulch.

The compost helps retain water deep in the soil for the plant’s roots. Mulch prevents evaporation. Avoid creating mulch mounds – leave some room around the stem and base of the plant so water can get to the soil near the plant.

  3. Capture rainwater.

Store this free water source in a rain barrel. You can even connect the barrel to your irrigation system for a double-conservation solution.
