Black Music Month

June is Black Music Month!

Nashville is Music City, but not just for country music. We’re home to many accomplished musicians in a variety of genres: jazz, folk, Americana, gospel, and more. An excellent way to experience music and immerse yourself in music history is at the National Museum of African American Music, located at 5th and Broadway in downtown Nashville.

Thanks to music pros Kenny Gamble, Ed Wright, and Dyana Williams, June has been all about celebrating the amazing impact of black music for the past forty-five years. With President Jimmy Carter's formal recognition in 1979, Black Music Month has transformed into a nationwide festivity. Join the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) in honoring the icons, legacies, and future stars of black music.

Here are just a few of the upcoming events at NMAAM:

Wednesday, June 5: Nissan Free Wednesday with a screening of Purple Rain (Happy Birthday Prince!). A Purple Rain mixology class will also be offered for an additional fee.

Thursday, June 6: Juke! A Black Country Celebration is a concert to honor Juke-joints impact on present-day Honky Tonks and the songwriting talents of Mr. Anthony Smith.

Friday, June 7: Measures & Melodies and White House Photo Exhibition Opening Reception, including a panel discussion in celebration of the founding of Black Music Month.

Later in June:

Juneteenth Weekend (615 Day & Block Party) | June 15th-16th
Juneteenth Community Day | June 19th
